Once in a while the Great British weather surprises us all, this weekend was one of those. The weather for the last few weeks have been dull, wet and cold along with the darker evenings what with the clocks reverting to GMT. The weekend arrived and something happened, it was sunny, there were blue skies and even better no or little wind. It looked like the winter was here but those nice cold type days that are sunny and clear. I had planned to be away over the weekend and thus unable to attend the CROCK meeting on the Sunday. Anyway, after seeing the weather on Saturday and the forecast for the following day I changed my plans. Sunday arrived and thankfully the weather was as forecast, that?s a first I hear you say. Well this is the sort of weather you just have to launch rockets, as it was probably the best weather we have had for rockets all year, except a little colder. The clear crisp air and dark blue skies made this a fantastic day for rockets, a great way to finish the CROCK meetings for 2004. |

Some of the hardcore CROCK crew arrived to take advantage of the great weather and get some rocket flights in before the year was out. I didn?t have much to fly and regretted not prepping a high power flight, as the clear blue skies were magnificent. I decided to fly my Aerotech Barracuda on one of my diminishing Aerotech motors, an F25-9W to be precise. The rocket ignited first time and made a superb and straight flight to at least 2Kft. Michael launched his Super Raptor on a Pro38 J400SS. The rocket screamed off the pad in a plume of black smoke, although the parachute ejection deployed instantly after motor burnout causing some minor damage to the rocket. Pete launched his Rebel Rocketry Buccannear on a Pro38 three or four grain. The rocket weathercocked slightly but this may have been due to the slow liftoff generated by the average thrust of this Pro38 motor, the rocket was recovered with no problems. Malcolm was feeling brave and attempted a flight with his upscale VMX plane while the wind was nice and low. The plane was powered by five E-motors and the initial boost looked great although the structure of the plane gave-way and disintegrated. Malcolm said he will be rebuilding his upscale VMX with added strength so will hopefully see that next year. There were lots of other flights including a good old Viper4 dragrace and more Pro38 flights including Malcom?s Christmas Cracker rocket on a J400SS and Pete?s PML Bullpup that is a great flyer. | A great days flying was had by all and certainly a welcomed finish to the years CROCK flying. Flying kicks off in January next year on the more spacious North side of the marsh that will hopefully bring back some great rocket flights. Also look out for the new CROCK website at www.crock.org.uk that will hopefully keep all the clubs news and events centralised and more easily accessible. |
